76 • JANUARY 2015 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Through the Years with World Fence News January 1990 cover January 1985 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the Janu- ary 1985 issue of World Fence News, 30 years ago this month. • The cover photo for January showed a fall fashion display at one of the major department stores at the Ogden City Mall, located in Ogden, Utah. Eddie Howell of Acme Fence in Ogden, who was serving as IFIA sec- ond vice-president, provided some gates for the display in exchange for having his fence signs on all six gates used. Howell, who took the photograph, said it was good P.R. and inexpensive advertising. WFN showed special nu-wave cover effects on the photo. • WFN contributing editor Jim Lucci discussed the opportunities available by attending trade shows, as well as one of their biggest problems: not enough people take advantage of them. • WFN contributing editor Jim Hart was up to his eyeballs in water. Lured to a job that he sold over the phone, Jim found circumstances that almost made him lose his shirt and he almost lost his trusty old truck in the process. • WFN ran an exclusive interview with Janet Henry, a woman not only well known in the fence industry, but also to countless cancer patients across the country for her ability to laugh in the face of mortality. • Formal training in the fence in- dustry was a relatively new concept, and limited. World Fence News took a look at some existing programs and what the relative personalities predicted for the future. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner continued with his series on estimating cost figuring for terminal posts, and supplied terminal post defi- nitions, applications and installation tips. January 1990 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the Janu- ary 1990 issue of World Fence News, 25 years ago this month. • The cover photo for January showed a 25-ft. high baseball back- stop being relocated by 350 feet and turned 180 degrees. Faced with the prospect of dis- assembling the backstop to move it, Arrow Fence Co. of Ft. Wayne, Ind. opted to use two 843 Bobcats and a 6,000 lb. Clark forklift to lift the en- tire structure and set it onto pre-set stubs in the new location. Photo by Arrow Fence Co. • The lead cover story was the first of a two-part series about how the 1990s would challenge subcontrac- tors. • While safety of children is the primary purpose of barriers around swimming pools, attractiveness has to be considered. A special editorial section exam- ined how pool fencing can be both safe and good looking. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner explained how labor costs on baseball backstop jobs can be tricky, and he noted some of the pitfalls that should be avoided. • Bob Reiger said that you can't be bashful if you want your gate operator sales to grow!
