Inside This Issue: NDPA kicks off drowning prevention campaign The challenges of starting your own business, by Jim Lucci Major Rockaway Beach development rocks vinyl What was once a desolate and litter strewn section of shoreline in eastern Queens, N.Y. is being devel- oped into one of the largest and most modern residential housing complexes in New York City. Arverne by the Sea consists of five neighborhoods, three of which are completed, and includes a school, a shopping mall, a boardwalk, a community center and a church. The development is located on famed Rockaway Beach, only a few miles southwest of John F. Kennedy International Airport. The setting is beautiful, with end- less views of the Atlantic Ocean. But along with the visual beauty comes a corrosive oceanfront environment that can play havoc with exposed metal structural items. So for the fencing, railing and landscape and structural amenities, the obvious choice was vinyl – and huge amounts of it. Enter Schiano Bros., Inc., which has operated from its Rosedale, N.Y. headquarters for the past 43 years. Schiano Bros., Inc. was started by Jerry Schiano and his two brothers, and was incorporated in 1969. Jerry and his wife, Joyce, are the principle individuals in the company, and have been for the last 25+ years. Schiano Fence, the exclusive dis- tributor and sales agent for Country Estate® Fence, Deck and Railing in New York and Long Island, was se- lected to design the third story pergo- las and trellises for Arverne by the Sea, and to provide and install handrailing, balcony railing and spaced picket perimeter fence.
