16 • APRIL 2012 • WORLD FENCE NEWS DoorKing adds wireless voice, data and video adapter for its 1812 Series residential telephone intercom systems INGLEWOOD, Calif. — DoorKing has introduced a wireless adapter for its 1812 Series of residen- tial telephone intercom systems. The adapter will provide homeowners with high quality wireless voice, data and video. The wireless adapter was designed as a "plug-and-play" device that easily connects to any DoorKing 1812 Series telephone intercom system and the homeowner's router and two-line tele- phone. Line-2 is dedicated to the 1812 and provides full-duplex voice com- munication wirelessly from the home to the access point. By using an IP ad- dressable camera, video can also be transmitted from the access point to the home. In addition to voice and video, the 1812 Access Plus model can also be programmed wirelessly from the homeowner's PC. "Using the wireless adapter elim- inates the need to trench for the wire runs, which is labor intensive, time consuming and expen- sive," said Richard Se- divy, DoorKing's director of marketing. "The wireless adapter eliminates all that." Working range for the wireless adapter is 1,000 feet, and up to three access points can be used simul- taneously. Sedivy also stated that the wireless adapter can be used with DoorKing's 1830 Series commercial telephone entry systems, but only to program the systems wirelessly (no wireless voice). Gerry told us that last season finished better than a year ago, but it still wasn't terrific. The company does 100% residen- tial, with a DIY component as well. The company handles gate operators, fence installation tools, aluminum pool fence, vinyl fence, vinyl deck and rail systems, vinyl coated chain link, and wood fence, among other products. We asked Gerry what his outlook is for the residential market this year, and he said that it doesn't look good. Any time that disposable income is not there, people aren't that interested in putting up a fence, he stated. And those who are interested are shopping for deals. Further, we asked if the buying habits of homeowners are changing, and he said that people are looking for alternative fencing at cheaper prices than is realistic. The customers do not have any idea, nor do they really un- derstand, what is involved with the purchase of a fence, and don't want to pay for labor intensive construction, he said. Gerry said he feels that the level of respect is just not there. We then asked Gerry whether, over the past couple of years, the com- pany participated in any projects that they know were tied to the federal stimulus bill. Gerry very succinctly said, "no." We then asked whether or not the company had instituted any cost-sav- ing measures, and Gerry replied "not a whole lot but that we did cut out the Yellow Pages and are making use of the internet, such as for our web site." We asked if the company sells ad- ditional items along with their fence jobs, and Gerry replied "not really." We looked at some company his- tory and were told that the company is a family owned and operated business located in the Hudson Valley region of New York. It was originally estab- lished in 1997 as a landscape/hard- scape installation contractor, which grew to include fence installation and repair service, serving Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan Counties in New York. By 2005, the company evolved into a "fence only" company servicing the Hudson Valley. With the development of the home improvement chain stores, Pro Fence recognized the need for a knowledge- able supplier of high quality fence products to serve smaller installation companies and other contractors, as well as the do-it-yourself installer.
