I pledge to spread the message that Simple Steps Save Lives to my family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. I will let people know that adding as many proven water safety steps as possible is the best way to as- sure a safe and fun experience at pools and spas, because you can never know which one might save a child's life – until it does." MagnaLatch® latch and TruClose® D&D, makers of the self-latching pool gate self-closing hinges, encourages the fencing indus- try to educate homeowners on the value of isolation fencing. With pool season soon to be in full swing, the company provided some ways that fence contractors can get the word out about the importance of isolation fenc- ing between a home and a pool or spa: • Partner with pool service com- panies in promoting isolation fencing around pools. • Offer to assist realtors who have families who are interested in homes with pools, but have concerns because they also have young children. Prepare "pool safety kits" that realtors can give to prospective homeowners, including safety brochures along with informa- tion on your company's products and services. • Contact your local foster and adoption agencies, because all prospective foster and adoptive homes must have isolation fencing around water areas prior to the home inspec- tion, including pools, fountains, ponds and spas. This is another great resource for providing safety brochures with your company's products and services. • Have a "pool safety" booth at home improvement and/or safety fairs sponsored by organizations in your community. • Make sure your web site not only features pool fencing, but provides pool safety information so that search engines find it when people search under that topic. • Make sure that isolation fencing includes gates with rust-free, self- latching and self-closing gate hard- ware, like the products that D&D Technologies has worked for years to develop. • Make sure homeowners under- stand that it's vital that a gate closes and latches every time – from the viewpoint of both safety and potential liability. If they have D&D's hardware on their gates, you can tell them how to adjust it for tension and gate align- ment. D&D's latches and some hinge models are adjustable vertically and horizontally, and hinges are tension adjustable. • If an existing gate has rusting, non-adjustable hardware, sell the homeowner on the value of a hardware retrofit. (D&D has a 2" spacer avail- able for MagnaLatch retrofit installa- tions.) Here are some web sites that you can visit to get good information on pool safety which you can use to edu- cate homeowners or to include in your pool safety kits: • www.poolsafety.gov – Consumer Product Safety Commission. • www.ddtechglobal.com – D&D Technologies – MagnaLatch and Tru- Close hinges. • www.NDPA.org – National Drowning Prevention Alliance. • www.redcross.org – American Red Cross (search for water safety). • www.theapsp.org – The pool in- dustry's association (search for con- sumer resources). • www.usa.Safekids.org – Safe Kids (search under drowning). Pool barrier codes require pool gates to be self-closing and self-latch- ing, and to open away from the pool.
