"This, of course, is a situation which can damage the reputation of chain link products and our industry, and can result in exposure to products liability claims," said CLFMI presi- dent Michael C. Sondberg. "Specifi- cally, there has reportedly been a noticeable increase in the use of light wall tubing for residential use." He added that the board has rein- forced to all CLFMI member firms that the association firmly supports the use of industry standards and guide- lines in the manufacture and sale of all chain link fencing materials. The CLFMI bylaws state that among the objectives of the Institute are "To seek to assure a continuing and increasing utilization of chain link fence, manu- factured in accordance with appropri- ate quality standards, so as to contribute to the privacy and security needs of the population and to enhance the welfare of the industry" and "To promote and aid in the development of standards and specifications that tend to improve the quality and perform- ance of chain link fence and acces- sories." In accordance with this second ob- jective, CLFMI several years ago un- dertook an extensive testing and development program to establish guidelines for residential chain link fencing systems. This program in- cluded consumer surveys, third-party field testing, and contractor and man- ufacturer input. The result was the publication of Tennis - Baseball - Basketball - Soccer - Volleyball Fence Screen - Protective Padding - Custom Netting the CLFMI Fact Guide for Residential Fencing, which included specific guidelines (based on safety tests and consumer input) for residential chain link fence top rail and line posts. (These guidelines may be found on the CLFMI web site – www.chainlink- info.org, along with other educational materials.) www.douglas-sports.com USA Manufacturer 800-553-8907 "The board has reminded CLFMI members that it is incumbent on all member firms to support the Institute's objectives and to promote the use of these recommended product guide- lines in the manufacture and sale of chain link products," said Sondberg. "The board would also urge members to inform their industry partners of CLFMI's dedication to promoting the use of appropriate materials and en- courage those partners to also insist on the use of top-quality products meet- ing industry guidelines. "CLFMI's legal counsel advises that the use of fencing products that are not appropriately designed and manufactured to meet a particular ap- plication may result in products liabil- ity claims on the part of consumers and third parties that have been in- jured," he noted. CLFMI will be communicating these concerns to others in the indus- try, including related associations, the contractor community, nonmember manufacturers, distributors, and the media, Sondberg added.
