He also provided some very interesting history of the committee, including a report from its pre-organizational meeting on Nov. 21, 1972. If you do any work involving standards and specifications, the work of Committee F14 on Fences undoubtedly affects you. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the formation of ASTM Committee F14 on Fences, and I would like to share some detailed information from the 1973 ASTM annual report regarding the initial meeting, election of officers and subcommittees formed, said Markobrad. Today the committee has grown to include six technical subcommittees and 164 members representing producers, users and general interest members from all segments of the fence industry. Over the years the committee has developed and currently has jurisdiction over 44 standards, he noted. The F14 committee meets twice a year to review and discuss revisions to existing standards as well the ongoing process of developing new standards. (The committees first meeting was held Feb. 26 during the FENCETECH 2013 convention and trade show. The committee traditionally meets during the FENCETECH shows.) The committee extends an open invitation to anyone interested to attend the meetings, join the committee and become an active participant in the standards development process, he said. You can obtain more information on Committee F14 on Fences as well as other committees at the web site www.astm.org. Markobrad may be at nickmarkobrad@gmsolutions.org. The following is from the 1973 ASTM annual report regarding the initial meeting, election of officers and subcommittees of Committee F14 on Fences: Committee F14 on Fences held its pre-organizational meeting on Nov. 21, 1972, at ASTM headquarters. This meeting was brought about because the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute and the International Fence Industry Association were searching for an organization involving consumers to develop standards. This effort was further stimulated by the federal governments desire to cease their activities in writing consumer specifications where a respected non-governmental body involving consumers will perform the task. This meeting was chaired by D.I. Finch, a member of ASTMs board of directors. Fifteen interested persons attended and determined that there was a need for standards. A nominating committee of D.V. Reed, Ernest Horvick, and J.M. Winge was formed. A tentative title, scope and subcommittee structure were developed to send to individuals and organizations to be invited to the organizational meeting on Feb. 20, 1973. The organizational meeting was held on Feb. 20, 1973 at ASTM headquarters in Philadelphia. Fifty-three interested parties attended. The following officers were elected: Chairman, J.M. Winge, senior buyer, fencing, Sears, Roebuck and Co.; producer vice-chairman, S.M. Broski, Jr., vice-president, Broski Brothers; consumer vice-chairman, K.C. Willis, past president, International Fence Industry Association; recording secretary, W.L. Pfarr, Jr., continued on page 68
