A critical component of the reconstruction was the fabrication and installation of approximately 3,000 lineal feet of aluminum railing on the new boardwalk. Many dramatic images of devastation to the East Coast from Hurricane Sandy were broadcast and published last October, but probably none were as memorable as the destruction of the boardwalk in the historic and iconic community of Seaside Heights, N.J. The photos of the Jetstar roller coaster that fell into the Atlantic Ocean with the Casino pier were especially poignant. Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the second-costliest hurricane in United States history (about $65 billion). But in its aftermath, business (and life) had to go on. Seaside Heights is a resort community, with a beach, an amusementoriented boardwalk, and numerous clubs and bars, making it a popular summer destination. The town is also known as the setting for the first five seasons of the hit MTV show Jersey Shore, with the director of the borough's business improvement district saying in 2010 that "we can't even calculate the economic benefit" to Seaside Heights from the continued presence of the show. So, economically as well as socially, it was critical that the boardwalk amusement area be back in operation as soon as possible, hopefully in time for the huge Memorial Day weekend crowds. And sure enough, right on target for Memorial Day, the Seaside Heights boardwalk was reconstructed and ready for business after months of relentless construction. A critical component of the reconstruction was the fabrication and installation of approximately 3,000 lineal feet of aluminum railing on the new boardwalk. Materials chosen were SPECRAIL's Bronze 48 in. high Bennington style, with the picket points removed and replaced with graphite plugs.
