32 • SEPTEMBER 2013 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Encon Electronics hosted its 13th annual golf tournament at Deer Ridge Golf Club in Brentwood, Calif. on July 20, with over 90 people braving 95 degree heat to participate in a traditional best-ball scramble based on a very untraditional music theme. A total of 17 manufacturers sponsored the event, including All-OMatic, American Access Systems, Ameriline, BD Loops, DAC Industries, DoorKing, EDI, FAAC, HySecurity, LiftMaster, Linear Corporation, Miller Edge, Nice/Apollo, Reno A&E, Secura Key, and Viking Access Systems. "Encon hosts this annual event to thank our dealers and manufacturers for their support throughout the year," said Encon's general manager, Jeff They got the beat! Wacky and fun music theme forms backdrop for Encon's 13th annual golf tourney Over 90 persons participated in a traditional best-ball scramble based on a very untraditional music theme, as Encon Electronics hosted the 13th in its series of popular and fun "thank you" golf tournaments for dealers and manufacturers. Whether the theme is movies, music or something really off the wall, the emphasis is always on fun. (Photos courtesy Encon Electronics) Harris. "Without their participation and the incredibly generous donations from our sponsors, we could not host an event of this caliber." At the registration desk, attendees checked in and spun the "Big Wheels Keep on Rolling" wheel. Then they moved on to the putting green to compete in the "The Wall" contest sponsored by FAAC. Participants did their best to conquer three challenging putts involving two brick walls. Tim Dubato of T.D. Access in Santa Rosa, Calif. won the putting contest and took home a $250 Lowes gift card courtesy of FAAC. Encon training director Tim Nordstrom kicked off the tournament with a complete breakdown of the games and course rules. Next, 20 groups teed off to play 18 holes of golf peppered with music inspired contests created by Encon's creative marketing team. Several manufacturers participated by playing in the golf tournament while others preferred to work a contest hole. Chuck VanSickle of Linear Corporation set the pace at the "Born to Run" hole where groups did their best to finish a par 3 hole in the quickest time possible. Brian and Shawna Dickson of BD Loops worked the "I Walk the Line" hole and determined the drive closest to the line. Art Hird from A&D Automatic Gate in Redwood City, Calif. shattered the competition with a drive landing only 17.5" away from the curvy line. He won an HD Kindle Fire courtesy of BD Loops. According to Harris, the FAAC "Another One Bites the Dust" hole tested some groups. The contest required each foursome to eliminate one player after every shot and some lost their best player early during this par 5. The last player remaining had to complete the hole solo but won the most raffle tickets. Participants had additional opportunities to earn tickets at the two Closest to the Pin holes coined the "Straight Up" hole and the "Beat It - Beat the Pro" hole. Golf professional Blake Bertrand went head-to-head with each of the participants on this short par 3. Golfers skilled enough to land their tee shot closer to the pin than Bertrand earned bonus tickets and bragging rights for the day. In addition to the traditional contests, Encon introduced a new contest this year called the "Sabotage Hole." Each group was able to pick one of three options for the group behind them in an attempt to sabotage their score on that hole. Options included adding a stroke to their score, playing the entire hole with only irons, or allowing only one person on the team to tee off. Following golf play, attendees enjoyed a gourmet lunch sponsored by DoorKing and Miller Edge. LiftMaster sponsored all the beverages for the day including complimentary drinks and snacks on the golf course. Immediately after lunch, the continued on page 35 The team from A&D Automatic Gates took first place. Above, left to right, are Robert Reeves, Scott Reeves, and Keenan and Art Hird. Did some of these album covers look vaguely different from the originals? If you looked closely you realized that sponsor's faces had been superimposed over those of the stars. Crazy, huh?
