12 • AUGUST 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS "In sports, winning and losing matters. It matters. It doesn't matter if you are dealing with kids or col- leagues: No team, period, can go onto a fi eld expecting to lose a game." So why is complacency and au- tonomy so commonplace in the busi- ness world? In sports, it is up to the coaches to instill this mindset in their team; in business it is up to the manager. That is why, with the economy sluggish, success is paramount; it's time to switch from a management culture to a coaching culture. To play ball. And to win. Established leadership expert Nathan Jamail addresses this prob- lem head-on with The Leadership Playbook, a straightforward guide to successfully employing coaching strategies in the workplace. (Gotham Books; available August 2014; $27; ISBN: 9781592408665.) Jamail has seen that there are big differences between managing and coaching, and he lays out the differ- ences and teaches the skills leaders need in order to be an effective coach. The Leadership Playbook deftly addresses: • The fi ve crucial differences be- tween managing and coaching. • Resolving issues proactively rather that reactively and creating an involvement that constantly pushes employees to be their best. • Focusing on the more humane principals of leadership – gratitude, positivity, and recognition – that keep morale high. • Holding teams and individuals accountable. • Constantly recruiting talent ("building the bench") rather than fi lling positions only when they are empty. Jamail's experi- ence as a motivation- al business speaker has given him an ease with words that trans- lates perfectly to the page; his relatable writing style, inspiring stories and re- al-life examples, meticulous research and proven successes make it easy to see why he has the respect of the world's foremost corporations. The Leadership Playbook com- bines business acumen with sound ad- vice that will motivate both employers and employees to re-evaluate their strategy, get off the bench, get into the game – and most important – win. Nathan Jamail owns several small businesses and, as president of Jamail Development Group, trains coaches, and mentors professionals in many industries. Prior to found- ing his own company, he coached at several Fortune 100 companies and won numerous national sales excel- lence awards for his results at a For- tune 500 company. The author of the self-published books The Sales Lead- ers Playbook (2008), The Sales Pro- fessionals Playbook (2011), and The Sales Leaders Gameplan (2012), his articles have appeared in The Com- mercial Appeal, The Drake Business Review, Small Business Opportuni- ties, Home Business Magazine, and more. Creating a coaching culture to build winning business teams BY NATHAN JAMAIL, PRESIDENT, JAMAIL DEVELOPMENT GROUP Focus on jobsite electrical safety COURTESY OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION The normal wear and tear on ex- tension and fl exible cords at your site can loosen or expose wires, creat- ing hazardous conditions. Cords that are not 3-wire type, not designed for hard-usage, or that have been modi- fi ed, increase your risk of contacting electrical current. How do I avoid hazards? – Use factory-assembled cord sets. – Use only extension cords that are 3-wire type. – Use only extension cords that are marked with a designation code for hard or extra-hard usage. – Use only cords, connection de- vices, and fi ttings that are equipped with strain relief. – Remove cords from receptacles by pulling on the plugs, not the cords. – Continually audit cords on-site. Any cords found not to be marked for hard or extra-hard use, or which have been modifi ed, must be taken out of service immediately. Flexible cord not 3-wire, hard service variety A worker received a fatal shock when he was cutting drywall with a metal casing router. The router's 3-wire power cord was spliced to a 2-wire cord and plug set which was not rated for hard service.
