12 • SEPTEMBER 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Congressman says airline stowaway incident shows weaknesses in airport perimeter security SAN JOSE, Calif. — California Congressman Eric Swalwell says a teen stowaway who fl ew to Hawaii in a jet wheel well on April 20 should never have been able to climb the San Jose International Airport fence unde- tected. Swalwell said in a recent news conference that he's asking the Trans- portation Security Administration (TSA) to test perimeter alert sys- tems at several U.S. airports to see if technology can help prevent future breaches. Yahya Abdi of Santa Clara, Calif. miraculously survived the trip to Ha- waii. After touring San Jose airport's perimeter, Swalwell said no video has surfaced confi rming the teen's claim he climbed the fence, nor are there signs of where he went over. Swalwell says airport offi cials told him they already are increasing video surveillance. But he says there simply isn't enough manpower to watch all the video feeds.
