18 • SEPTEMBER 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS When Visintainer Middle School in Brunswick, Ohio expanded in 2011, the baseball field behind the school could no longer be used by the Bruns- wick Youth Sports (BYS) 15-18 Boys League. The move of that league to the Upper Mooney baseball field re- sulted in the 13-14 Boys League being displaced from that facility to the field at Boston Knoll Park. The field at Boston Knoll Park, a Brunswick city-owned property, was built predominantly for softball games, and would require some mod- ification. BYS 13-14 Boys League commis- sioner Joe Hetzel, who is a registered professional engineer, voluntarily designed and engineered the proj- ect, provided BYS with the funding, and organized the project activities. "This project was a triumph in- volving a number of people work- ing together to benefit the citizens of Brunswick who use the field and live near it," Hetzel stated. (Many World Fence News readers in the access con- trol industry will recognize Hetzel as technical director of DASMA, the Door & Access Systems Manufactur- ers Association International, head- quartered in Cleveland, Ohio.) Netting 30 feet high was con- structed along the left field line and in the outfield to minimize softballs going onto residents' properties. No netting was constructed along the right field line, since the land south of that line and away from the field was undeveloped. The combination of recent resi- dential development in close proxim- ity to the right field line of the Bos- ton Knoll Park baseball field, and the number of foul balls landing in that residential area off the bats of right handed batters off of hardball pitch- ers, resulted in the need to extend the netting, Hetzel explained. Brunswick Youth Sports led the way in designing, organizing and co- ordinating a retrofitted netting and support system project over 100 feet in length extending from behind the backstop to the first base area. Hetzel noted that a number of community-minded firms and indi- viduals pitched to help make the proj- ect possible. John Piepsny, director of parks and recreation in Brunswick, worked with the city building depart- ment to waive permit fees and to ex- pedite the permit process. A northeast Ohio fence company, Great Northern Fence, contracted for the work at a discounted cost. The netting was sup- plied by Mid-America Sports Advan- tage, headquartered in Jasper, Ind. Kelley Steel Erectors of Bedford, represented by Bob Hurley and Noel Murray, donated the steel posts need- ed to help support the netting. The donation was coordinated by Bruns- wick's Mapleside Farms owner Greg Clement through local resident Gary Anderson. ABC Equipment Rental in Brunswick donated equipment used to install the netting.
