WORLD FENCE NEWS • JANUARY 2012 • 71 Through the Years with World Fence News January 1987 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the January 1987 edition of World Fence News, 25 years ago this month. • The cover for January showed a chain link fence job going up in the Buffalo, New York area. You can bet the installation was in good hands: the fence crew had a combined total of 60 years of fencing experience. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner passed along some time and money saving tips on constructing temporary fence and temporary guide rail as he continued his series on spe- cialty fencing items. • Callers to J&L Fence Co. got a spicy greeting when Jim Hart vented his frustration on his new answering machine. • WFN contributing editor Jim Lucci said Ben Franklin wasn't exag- gerating when he said "A penny saved is a penny earned." Jim looked at the little things that can cost a company big money. January 1992 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the January 1992 edition of World Fence News, 20 years ago this month. • The cover photo for January was a picture of the Bartholomew County Jail in Columbus, Indiana. The rooftop dome was fabricated from white vinyl coated chain link, and received the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers In- stitute Design Award for 1991. The photo was courtesy of Don M. Hisaka & Associates, Architects, of Cambridge, Massachusetts. • The lead cover article dealt with a drug bust in Miami by the U.S. Cus- toms Service and the DEA. The agents seized 24,000 pounds of cocaine which was smuggled inside concrete fence posts imported from Venezuela! • Gate automation specialist Chuck Lee pointed out that many gate operator installations share the same basic characteristics. Nothing beats ex- perience, but realizing some of those similar traits can help simplify many installations, he said. • The judges of the World Fence News Fence Truck of the Year Contest picked a nice little 1985 International belonging to McAlester Construction and Fencing as 1991's winner. • Konz Fence Co. announced it had recently completed "one of those jobs that only comes along once in a decade for many companies, where we're happy, the customer is happy, everybody's happy." • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner gave some fence estimating tips to help prevent you from leaving out those important details that can make the difference between profit and loss. • WFN contributing editor Jim Lucci advised against blindly chasing after any commercial work that comes along. Restrictive contract clauses could make this the most expensive work you ever do. Not all business is good business! Thompson had supplied pho- tos for previous issues of World Fence News. • Chain link manufacturers estab- lish goals, discuss residential guide- lines, at bi-annual meeting. • Correctly estimating labor for fence and backstop repairs helps put profit back into those jobs, according to WFN contributing editor Herb Borner. • A fence company was proud that its fencing passed "Fran-tic Fran's" hurricane test. • More about those three- and four-letter words "Inc." and "Corp." from WFN contributing editor Jim Lucci. • Lumber price increases reflected industry changes, an article reported. • A bank gave a fencer the runaround over a check written on a piece of paper torn from the roof of a truck cab.
