84 • JANUARY 2012 • WORLD FENCE NEWS At its online learning center, Zareba offers tips to cost-effectively maintain electric fencing systems LITITZ, Penn. — Woodstream Corporation, a global manufacturer of animal control products including the FiShock and Zareba brands of elec- tronic containment systems that pro- vide safe, economical alternatives to barbed wire fencing, now offers infor- mation about how to maintain electric fencing systems via the company's on- line learning center. Woodstream recommends that fence owners inspect five different components of their fence routinely to ensure that it is maintained properly, including fence charger, insulators, wire, grounding and overall system in- spection. Andrea Itnyre, category develop- ment associate for the electronic con- tainment division of Woodstream, noted, "There are some easy to do, yet often overlooked, aspects of fence POST & RAIL FENCE EQUIPMENT • Tenoners • Dowelers • Pointers • Domers • Gang Drills • Sanders • Chopsaws • Peelers VC-04 Portable Dowell/Tenon Cutter maintenance that help avoid failures that can put livestock in jeopardy. Knowing the specifics of one's system is the first step in ensuring you are well equipped to cost-effectively handle re- pairs and routine maintenance require- ments. "Take the fence charger, para- mount in maintaining your high tensile or standard electric fence," she said. "AC units should be checked regularly. A blinking light indicates that the fence charger is working properly. DC units must have batteries checked and replaced regularly. And, the battery on a solar unit should be recharged." Woodstream's learning center also provides recommendations to make fence maintenance hassle-free by hav- ing the right tools on hand. Having a simple instrument like a Dyna Products 6228 60th Ave. • Evart, MI 49631 888-820-3962 voltage tester, for example, helps fence owners quickly and easily trou- bleshoot short circuits and determine that adequate voltage is on the fence line, making diagnoses easier and re- pair time shorter. In addition to clearing fence wires from debris like tree branches and weeds that may draw power away from the fence, Woodstream's learning center offers other advice on additional visual inspections including walking the fence perimeter regularly to check insulators for cracks and breaks as well as inspecting corner insulators to ensure they are holding the proper amount of tension at all times. Visit the Zareba web site and check the learning center page for more information. By following a few simple, routine maintenance steps, ten- sile fencing can last for decades, and standard electric fencing systems can last for many years. And as for automated phone systems, we have discussed the con's (we can't think of any pro's) of them extensively over the past few months. • One way to really create good will and favorable publicity is to play an active role in your community. Many fence companies do this by supporting local charities, sponsoring Little League teams, and by donating fenc- ing or repairs to schools, churches, shelters and the like. Goodwill builds customer loyalty. BOOTH NO. 1143! • Within certain limitations, allow your employees the flexibility to use their best judgement in dealing with situations. We recently heard of a computer repair technician who went out on a service call, and discovered that the problem was simply a loose wire, which he promptly reconnected. He also performed some simple but important maintenance on the unit, and even then, did not feel he should charge the full service call fee. The customer was very grateful. The thing is, the "customer" was a local television station which was con- ducting an undercover investigation of the computer repair business. When this report aired, the company re- ceived thousands of dollars worth of very favorable (and free) publicity. Who says good deeds are not re- warded? Send Us Your Ideas for Pete & Jake Cartoons!
