FOCUS PSB UTV — Sport 28 • July 13, 2015 • Powersports Business www.PowersportsBusiness.com KBB.com data shows Polaris products unshaken at the top BY LISA PELISSIER CONTRIBUTING WRITER Editor's note: Lisa Pelissier is senior powersports analyst at Kelley Blue Book, and once again turned to her team to provide Powersports Busi- ness with insight into the latest in pre-owned buying interest of side-by-sides on KBB.com. UTV-SPORT Polaris swept the top 10 most researched sport side-by-sides category with its Ranger RZR series. Nine of the top 10 sport side-by- sides displaced 800cc, while the remaining side-by-side displaced 900cc. Newer vehicles are generating growing interest. The average gain for model-year 2011 through model-year 2013 side-by-sides was 30 percent in KBB.com web hits compared to the same time period last year. Model-year 2008 through model-year 2010 vehicles only gained an average of 4 percent. The top 10 sport side-by-sides for 2015 year-to-date are the same 10 models that led the list in 2014. UTV-RECREATIONAL/ UTILITY SEGMENT The top 10 recreational/utility side-by- sides list was evenly split between the Polaris Ranger XP series and the Yamaha Rhino series. The Yamahas were older than the Polaris side-by-sides in the top 10. The Yamahas were between 2005 and 2009 model years, and the Polaris models were between 2007 and 2012. Although the vehicles on the top 10 recre- ational/utility side-by-sides list showed an aver- age decline of 7 percent in KBB.com web hits, overall interest has grown, with the side-by-side category as a whole receiving 27 percent more KBB.com web hits for 2015 to-date compared to the same time period last year. UTV-SPORT 2014 MODELS Polaris took the first eight spots on the top 10 most researched model-year 2014 sport side- by-sides list. Can-Am took the other two spots. Both of the Can-Am vehicles in the top 10 show a decline in KBB.com web hits compared to the total number of hits garnered in 2014. The Polaris RZR XP 4 1000 EPS showed the same trend. It is notable, however, that this comparison is not direct. Model-year 2014 vehicles were on KBB.com for eight months (beginning May 1, 2014), while only five months of 2015 have passed. UTV-RECREATIONAL/ UTILITY 2014 MODELS Relatively new manufacturer Odes has continued to assert its place on the top 10 most researched model-year 2014 recreational/utility side-by-sides list, holding two spots. Despite dropping in rank, the No. 3 and No. 4 ranked Odes models were not far behind the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked Polaris models in KBB.com web hits. It will be interesting to watch this trend over time. Polaris dominated this list, taking five of the top 10 spots with its Ranger and Ranger XP series. In 2014, Polaris only occupied three spots on this list. The manufacturer ousted two Kawasaki side-by-sides occupying those posi- tions last year. UTV-2015 MODELS Polaris also dominated the top 10 most researched model-year 2015 side-by-sides list, with eight spots. Six of those positions are occupied by its sporty RZR series. The other two spots on the top 10 list were occupied by Honda's Pioneer 500, a new offer- ing for 2015, and the Can-Am Commander 1000 DPS. It must be noted that for many of the smaller manufacturers, Kelley Blue Book has not yet received enough market data to estab- lish used values. Their absence on this top 10 list may not be indicative of their later popular- ity, once used values are published.
