The Award is designed to spotlight unusual and creative uses of chain link materials, and is named for Les Grube, a past president of CLFMI and a fence industry pioneer. The Award recog- nizes both the architect and the in- stalling contractor. (Eligible projects must be architect-designed.) The "Serpentine Fence" is an inte- gral part of a newly-redesigned neigh- borhood park at the South Street Mall and Courts in Jamaica Plain (Boston), Massachusetts. Beth Galston of Envi- ronmental Sculpture was the designer and Bartek Konieczny of Solutions in Metal was the installer. They collabo- rated on the project, which took three years to complete. The colorful fence and a new land- scape of curved granite walls and paving designs create harmony. Galston writes, "I saw an opportu- nity for my sculpture idea when con- templating the existing chain link fence that separated the park from the tennis courts. Functionally, it needed to be there to keep tennis balls from Avalanche Series™ Concealed Fastener Fence Yorktown Series™ 5/8" x 3/4" Picket Ornamental Fencing Glass Panel Railing entering the park, but it was 120 feet long and not a thing of beauty. So I de- cided that I would design a new sculp- tural art fence to replace the existing chain link fence separating the South Street Mall and courts. I decided to use an ordinary material – chain link – in an extraordinary way. In a normal fence, the idea is that the posts are all vertical. In this fence, the rails at the top and bottom are serpen- tine, and the posts are purposely set at angles (none of them are straight) to create a sense of rhythm and energy. The chain link fabric is stretched around this structure to create billow- ing curves," she said. "This is a unique way to use chain link that has not been done previously.
