10 • MAY 2012 • WORLD FENCE NEWS The American Fence Association held its 2nd Fence Installation School March 11–16 in Tulsa, Okla. A team of four instructors – Tony Thornton, CAGOI, Jon Stiles, CFP, Bob Masten, CFP, and Steve Hoopman, CFP – taught the eight "core" modules to 24 students with assistance from the sup- port staff of Fred Hayworth, CFP, Lynn Hayworth, CFP, and Dennis Hammer, CFP. The modules covered site reading and layout, blueprint reading, personal safety, post setting and anchoring, post hole digging, concrete mixing, intro- duction to welding and truck and trailer safety and loading. Each session had classroom train- ing followed by actual hands-on activ- ity in the field. An additional class was Students taught wide ranging set of layout, installation and fabrication skills at AFA' given in first aid readiness by Red Cross–Tulsa. The students were also given fork lift training, with each student given the opportunity to operate a fork lift. This event was one of the highlights of the week, with each student having the op- portunity to use MIG, TIG and arc welders. The students were also trained on proper use of an acetylene torch and different cutting and heating techniques. During the field training, the stu- dents had the opportunity to use drilling, hole digging and driving equipment supplied by Rhino, Little Beaver, Atlas Copco, and Hilti Tools. Warren Caterpillar demonstrated their rubber track skidsteer and trained each student on safe operation before they had the opportunity to try out the equipment. During this training, each student used a hydraulic post hole dig- ger attachment and also lifted and moved materials on location to better understand operating techniques for the machines. A Hilti tool representative was on hand during one field training event and demonstrated different tools and attachment components in relation to the fence industry. One evening the students assem- bled after dinner to see different hand- made tools crafted by Steve Hoopman, CFP. Over the years, Hoopman has crafted tools that he felt would make his job installing fence a little easier and more productive. The final evening of the school was a fun night with a trip to the Bass Pro Shop.
