He also fl ew eight-hour bomber missions over Germany in a P-51 Mustang. Before the event kicked off, Chivas was escorted in to meet Lt. Col. Friend. Chivas was ecstatic. Also inside the museum, volun- teers had set up World War II displays of authentic uniforms, weapons and other memorabilia. They answered questions and offered attendees an opportunity to handle the weapons that were outfi tted with trigger locks. Meanwhile, the museum's AT-6/SNJ-6 Texan, a World War II trainer, sat quietly off to one side. Soon it would be rolled out for the winner of the People's Choice Bike Show to take fl ight just after noon. By 11:30 a.m. the tally of the votes was completed and the winners were announced through the P.A. sys- tem by museum staff. As you might have guessed, fi rst place went to the Tuskegee Airmen bike. Standing with Chivas behind the winning bike, Lt. Col. Friend looked at the airbrushed image of Lt. Col. Baugh on the front fender. He then looked at Chivas and said, "I knew Howard…" Chivas was stunned. Then, Lt. Col Friend said, "Howard didn't have a mustache until after… due to oxygen masks." Just after noon, Chivas was buck- led into the rear seat of the AT-6/ SNJ-6 Texan and given a briefi ng by the pilot. Soon after the pilot took his seat, donned his helmet and as the crowd leaned forward at the open hangar doors, he fi red that massive radial engine. It wasn't long before the North American AT-6/SNJ-6 roared by in front of the crowd as the prop bit into the air driven by that 600 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN-1 Wasp radial engine and rolled off to the left. Following were three low-level passes, thrilling the spectators. After landing, the AT-6/SNJ-6 Texan taxied up to the hangar, the pilot cut the engine, spun to the right and coasted to a perfect stop. It was the fi rst time Chivas had ever fl own in any aircraft and it was the same type of air- craft both Lt. Col. Baugh and Lt. Col. Friend trained in over 70 years ago. This year, commemorative T-shirts were offered by Lyon Air Museum for $20 and are still available in the muse- um's gift shop. 4 Bikes and Bombers Continued from page 22
