86 nAugust 2016n www.thunderpress.net THUNDER PRESS by Don Kline CHINO HILLS, CALIF., JUNE 4—A few months ago I overheard someone saying the name Steve McQueen and that piqued my curi- osity, plus I heard motorcycles men- tioned. I did hear the word "car" too, I think. I admit I'm a big fan of Steve McQueen's movies with Bullitt and On Any Sunday among my favorites. Anyhow, that is how I got reminded that the annual Car and Motorcycle Show in his name was coming up in June. The show takes place at Boys Republic, which is a place for youths with behavioral, social, educational and emotional problems to fi nd help by going through the pro- grams on the 200-acre campus, which has dorms, gyms and a farm. Getting to the show was a trip in itself. This year they had the motorcycles parking up on top of a small hill, and that after riding in on a gravel road. Now I'm no stranger to riding on rough roads or dirt, but riding a lowered street bike on those kinds of surfaces tends to raise your awareness and going up that little hill I thought I was going to have put my hill climbing skills to use of which I actually have none. (All kidding aside I really didn't have a problem getting up the hill.) The show is spread out around the campus. The motorcycles were tucked into their usual area on the running track near the stage. In all I counted about 40 motorcycles entered in the show and the mix was made up of quite a few brands. Along with the Harley-Davidsons there was a Big 9TH ANNUAL FRIENDS OF STEVE MCQUEEN CAR AND MOTORCYCLE SHOW BOYS REPUBLIC BALLYHOO An impressive mix of marques See "Story," page 97, column 1 Brad Boyle's Ghost Rider Bike The Magician's Best Trail Bike trophy went to Rudy Pock's 1971 H-D Baja 125
