Stop by booth #701 at FENCETECH! 14 • MARCH 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS John Shelton was pioneer in modern-day fence industry John Albert Shelton, 85, of Win- ston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away December 5, 2013. He was born Jan- uary 9, 1928 in Forsyth County, North Carolina to the late Grover C. Shel- ton and Marietta Reich Shelton. He graduated from Grif- fith High School in 1945 and contin- ued his business administration education at Catawba College. Mr. Shelton worked several years at Western Electric and later became manager of the Sears Roebuck farm store, where he started their fence de- partment. This led to his going into business for himself at Fence Builders, Inc. in 1955. Within a year or two, his brother, Marcus, joined him. Marcus Shelton preceeded him in death in 2011. As an early leader in the American fence industry, Mr. Shelton served as president of the Carolinas Fence As- sociation, eventually serving as a member of the board of directors with the International Fence Industry Asso- ciation (now the American Fence As- sociation). March 4-8, 2014 are the dates for one of the most important industry events of the year: Fence Industry Week and FENCETECH2014. Fence Industry Week begins with a vast array of educational and certification pro- grams, with the FENCETECH trade show beginning later in the week. The location will be the Mandalay Bay Resort and Convention Center in Las Vegas. Regarding the educational and certification curriculum, attendees can choose among many skills and inter- ests. These include Certified Installer (CI), Automatic Gate Systems De- signer (AGSD), Certified Fence Pro- fessional (CFP), Sales Training School (STS), and the Vinyl Manufacturer's Association (VMA) Deck and Railing University Boot Camp. The FENCETECH2014 trade show kicks off on Thursday, March 6 and runs through noon on Saturday, March 8. You will find the official schedule of events on page 48. More show in- formation is presented in detail in the pages to follow. Registration is now open for Fence Industry Week and FENCETECH2014. Visit the web site at www.fencetech.com. For 2014, a few changes to the program structure have been made. More curriculum and certification opportunities are offered as part of Fence Industry Week. The AFA Chapter Breakfast on Thursday morning has a new format. Be there to show your chapter membership spirit and see which chapters take home awards. Immediately fol- lowing is a presenta- tion by well-known and respected industry professional Barry Willing- ham, vice-president of marketing and product management at Ameristar Fence Products. He will speak about the current state of the industry and where it's headed. On Friday morning there is a block of training especially for archi- tects, landscape architects and spe- cialty contractors to earn a possible 2.5 learning unit (LU) credits. The session was developed in conjunction with the continued on page 48 Barry Willingham throughout the country. Surviving are his wife, Martha (Dickie) Shelton; two daughters, Re- becca (Sunny) Shelton Jensen (Harold) and Laura Shelton Smith (Andrew); a son, John Albert Shelton, Jr. (Yvonne); nine grandchildren; a great grandson, Ethan John Highfield; a sister-in-law, Jackie Shelton; a brother-in-law, Lenue James; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Shelton's civic accomplish- ments included active long-term mem- bership in the Winston-Salem Lions Club, where he served as president in 1975-1976, and the Jaycees.
