Certified Installer certi- fication is currently under develop- ment. All courses are included in the CI package but may also be taken sep- arately. Details will be outlined on the registration form. Companies partici- pating in the Certified Installer pack- age with three or more registrants will receive a $25 rebate per attendee. CPR training and certification is included in CI package. Presenter: AFA Fence Installation School instructors. Personal Safety Tuesday (3/4) 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Learn how to work safely and minimize risk to self and others while completing a variety of tasks. Topics include the different types of personal protective equipment available, pre- venting on the job accidents and in- juries, maintaining a safe workplace, and responding to an accident. Truck & Trailer Loading Tuesday (3/4) 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Transporting people, tools, equip- ment and supplies to job sites occurs practically every day in this industry. Improper loading of trucks and trailers creates the potential for injury, prop- erty damage and costly inefficiencies. Learn how to correctly and safely load equipment and supplies onto a truck and trailer. Introduction to Welding Wednesday (3/5) 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. An essential part of building and installing fencing involves securely joining pipes, rods, plates and other metal profiles and pieces. Welding of- fers a quick and highly secure method for making these connections. Learn the basics of welding and, more specifically, how welding is com- monly used in fencing. Safety that is specific to welding will also be stressed. Note: This will not qualify the participant to be a welder. This sta- tus can only be achieved by complet- ing an appropriate welding apprenticeship and/or education or certification program. Site Reading & Layout Wednesday (3/5) 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Preparing for a fence installation properly will result in a safe and effi- cient process. Learn how to: • Verify materials, tools and equip- ment needed. • Locate and mark fence line and post positions. • Review job site for post and gate location and installation method. • Identify site characteristics for potential installation problems. • Understand pre-installation safety considerations. Blueprint Reading Wednesday (3/5) 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. What is a blueprint and how are they used? Topics covered: • Different types of plan sheets in a plan set. • Understanding components on individual plan sheets. • How to accurately calculate basic construction equations. Post Hole Digging Thursday (3/6) 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Post hole digging may seem like a simple task at first glance. However, post holes are the foundation of a fence and must be correctly prepared to ensure that posts are properly aligned and anchored. Each fence type requires a specific depth and diameter post hole. Each site is unique and pres- ents different challenges in terms of its terrain, soil type, structures and un- derground obstructions. Concrete Mixing Friday (3/7) 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Concrete is an important but mis- understood element in setting fence posts. It is not used to make fences stronger, but to provide compressive strength around posts. It is important that it is mixed in accordance with the type of fence being built and the envi- ronment in which the fence will be in- stalled. Gain a working knowledge of what concrete is, how it can be modi- fied for specific purposes and how to properly design and mix concrete. Post Setting & Anchoring Saturday (3/8) 7:45 a.m. – 9 a.m. Most job sites are not found on flat terrain with easy-to-dig soils. Differing topographies, ground conditions and man-made obstacles are often encountered on job sites and present challenges in setting posts properly. Learn methods for setting posts in concrete, driving posts into the ground, core drilling and anchoring posts with flanges and/or plates where other methods cannot be used.
