Companies with fewer than 10 employees can adopt a similar philos- ophy as I am about to describe, but the team contribution may be more diffi- cult to accomplish and possibly trans- fer into individual contributions. But try to be creative in the application of this very worthwhile system even if you are working in a small company. OK, this hypothetical Efficiency Reward system would be run by a ro- tating and constantly changing Effi- ciency Rewards Team (ERT) of employees from within all areas of the company. This month I would like to turn that scenario around and speak about the benefits that a good attitude can have on everyone in the company, and how much of a positive impact those constructive corporate behaviors can have on profits. To create a positive corporate en- vironment, one system I have success- fully used in the past with many of my clients is helping the owners of the company create an "Efficiency Re- ward" system for everyone in the com- pany. I have previously spoken to you about this system that I have created for correcting repetitive mistakes and rewarding good employee behavior and ideas in the past, but I feel this topic is so important it bears repeating. It is a system that is easy to adopt and, once adopted, will have many beneficial rewards for both the em- ployees and the company itself. This system would be run not by management, but by the employees. In fact, once the system is established, top management must walk away and let positive change happen from within, where it will be the most im- pactful, beneficial and long lasting. I will attempt to condense this team-building employee controlled concept that I have successfully used in many fence (and other) companies over the past several decades.
