On the commercial side there is a lot of building work on both new and renovations. Foreclosures are not an issue, Wal- ter said. We then asked about the com- pany's strategy for 2014. The company is trying to bid as much work as possible, we were told. They are looking to add a new truck and update their equipment where necessary. They are continuing to be very busy and they are also trying to upgrade in sev- eral areas. Finally for this issue we spoke with Bryant Thomas of Tri-West Fence LLC in Corrales, New Mex- ico. Bryant told us that he had just con- cluded the first season with his new company (actually he started in April) although he has been in the business for 19 years. This first "inaugural" sea- son ended up okay. The company business mix is 75% commercial and 25% residential. The company service area is all of New Mexico and West Texas. The commer- cial work, for the most part, is in the energy sector, casinos, and schools, Bryant said. On the residential side, the company does chain link, wood, and ornamental iron. We then asked Bryant what are some of the major changes or trends that he has seen in the fence business in the area. Despite only being with his company since last April, he told us that people's spending habits are very tight. People aren't spending money if they don't have to. And when they do, they are very selective. We were also told that New Mex- ico receives lots of federal dollars, but is also slow in the allocation of these dollars. We then asked if the changes he's seeing are for better or worse. Bryant told us that it clearly was worse. The company is willing, of course, to do the work, but is at the mercy of both the local government letting out the work and the people loosening their purse strings, so to speak. We then asked about the economy in the area. Bryant told us that it was slow and definitely not what it could be. On the commercial side, schools are being built and there are renova- tions on existing buildings going on. There is also ongoing work in the en- ergy field. When asked about the strategy for 2014, Bryant told us that they were going to have a strategy meeting, but at the time we spoke there were no clear cut directions as yet.
