Explore Victorian feasting at Pabst Mansion this summer THE HISTORIC Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion at 2000 W. Wisconsin Ave. explores the Victorian period with the exhibition Edible Excess, on display through Oct. 30. Bigger, grand, more lavish describes this period. The excesses of the 19th century could be seen in virtually everything the upper class could afford including their homes, décor, clothing, and vacations. So it comes as no surprise that when it came to the dining habits of the period, the extravagance ruled. Edible Excess explores the elaborate etiquette of dining, rules regulating proper table settings, food preparation, menus, advertisements, dinnerware and glassware. The Pabst Mansion provides a unique setting to explore this topic by incorporating the Servants' Dining Room, Butler's Pantry, and Dining Room into the exhibit. These are areas of the house which would have been integral to preparing and serving elaborate meals. Visitors view recreated place settings featuring porcelain, glassware and silver normally not on display, as well as utensils crucial to food preparation. Menus for Pabst family events also illustrate the lavishness of special occasion dining. Other points of interest in the exhibit are Maria Best Pabst’s cookbooks, menus from Queen Victoria herself, advertisements from grocers and other vendors claiming to supply the best dining supplies, and much more. The Pabst Mansion is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $9/adults, $8/seniors and students, $5/children 6-17. Children under six are admitted free.
