KEY SPORTS Erin Hills, Blue Mound host U.S. Amateur THEMILWAUKEEAREAthismonth is playing host to yet anothermajor golf tournament, this time the nation’s oldest. The U.S.Amateur Championshipwill be played at ErinHills and BlueMound Golf & Country ClubAugust 22-28. Since 1895, theworld’s best amateurs have competed in this stroke- and match-play competition. Past champions include Bobby Jones,Arnold Palmer, JackNicklaus, Phil Mickelson, and TigerWoods. And for the first time since 1997, the event’s admission and parkingwill be free. ErinHills (262-670-8600,www.erinhills.com), which also is hosting the 2017 U.S. Open, is located about 40miles northwest of downtown Milwaukee. Inspired by classic Scottish and Irish courses, the young coursewas designed by MikeHurdzan, Dana Fry, and RonWhitten. The traditional, park-like BlueMound (414-258- 4656) hostedWisconsin’s firstmajor golf tourna- ment in 1933, PGAChampionshipwon by Gene Sarazen. It’s located about sevenmileswest of downtownMilwaukee in the suburb of Wauwatosa, along the eastern edge of the region’s popular retail center,MayfairMall. Stroke-play qualifying for the 312 playerswill take placeAugust 22-23 at both courses. The low 64 playerswill advance to thematch-play finals August 24-28 at ErinHills. “The 2011 U.S.Amateur provides an opportuni- ty towalk the fairways of a U.S. Open course at no charge,” says JohnMorrissett, ErinHills’ competitions director. In recent years,Wisconsin has hosted suchmajor golf tournaments as the PGAChampionship (BlueMound andWhistling Straits), U.S. Senior Men’s Open (Whistling Straits), the U.S. Women’s Open (Blackwolf Run), and the U.S. Women’sAmateur Public Links Championship (ErinHills). In addition to the U.S. Open in 2017, Wisconsinwill host its second U.S.Women’s Open in 2012 (Blackwolf Run), its fourth PGA Championship in 2015 (Whistling Straits), and the Ryder Cup in 2020 (Whistling Straits).
