WORLD FENCE NEWS • DECEMBER 2014 • 31 Dear World Fence News: As an old fencer, I've seen a lot of improvements through the years. Some of these changes have been well received, but some, I must say, have not. When I purchased my fi rst Laser Level, I found it to be of a great advan- tage when framing a structure, but not for fence construction. You just can't beat a tape measure and a length of string! Level or not, you must have a good eye when making a line of fence appealing to the onlooker. The two main stalwarts in my ar- senal of tools has to be my nail gun and my cable come-along. Both of these items are over 30 years old and persist in operating fl awlessly. The one main entity that has changed and gone down a slippery slope, well, that would be me. I no- ticed a few years ago that I was strug- gling, just a little bit, when attempting to pick up and carry a roll of chain link fabric. During the procedure I found my- self making some funny noises. The sound was disheartening, to say the least. It was a sound that you would ex- pect to hear on Halloween night in a grave yard, a low mournful groan. Later on, I discovered that "they" were placing more weight into the Portland cement bags. When lifting a bag off the fl atbed, I had to yell real- ly loudly and strain to keep my guts from falling out. Why don't they put handles on those bags of Portland? Through the subsequent years I've become aware of more and more noises that seem to emanate from my being. Even when I bend over to put on my shoes, I make these funny kind of sounds. Just bending over produces grunts and groans. My wife, Pat, says I sound like I'm dying when I turn over in bed at night. It drives her crazy. What in the world is wrong with being old and making weird sounds? I've paid my dues over the years. I should get a lit- tle respect around here. Anyway, I told Pat if she felt like it, she should slap me every time I started making those funny sounds. I go in to the hospital next Mon- day to rebuild my face.
