METALfab to include wide-ranging education program METALfab 2015, the annual convention and trade show of the Na- tional Ornamental & Miscellaneous Metals Association, will be held at the Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia, Penn. March 11–14, 2015. Details of the event's education program have now been announced. Below are some of the sessions planned; additional sessions are to be announced later. The complete pro- gram may be found at the web site www.nomma.org. • Leveraging your Competitive Advantage by Improving Productivity. How do you win in today's economy? Becoming a lower-cost producer is one strategy. Much like safety, pro- ductivity improvement starts at the top. Contrary to popular belief, pro- ductivity is not a field problem, but rather a management and leadership issue. In this session, you'll learn how to improve productivity to address market challenges by understanding how a minimal improvement in pro- ductivity will make you more compet- itive. • Connecting Actual Job Costs Back To Estimating. One risk to a company in a low-margin construc- tion economy is executing a project differently than how it was estimated (and vice versa). In this session, you'll learn how to maintain profitability by incorpo- rating field input into estimates and budgets, determining the healthy dif- ferences between an estimate and a budget, recognizing why and how ac- tual job costs should be tracked, and using job-cost information to improve estimating accuracy. • Performance Indicators that Drive Best Practices. If you are going to win at the game of contracting, you have to know the score. The score, however, is made up of more than profit. Success is determined by more than whether you made or lost money at the end of the job. Identify Key Performance Indica- tors (KPIs) so that contractors can de- velop the components of a solid game plan for tracking performance through the life of the project. Compile the results of the KPIs to develop your overall company perfor- mance on a timely basis so you can make corrections to keep your team on course. Measure your business's process- es to define success factors and mea- sure progress toward strategic goals. • Keys to Effective Management. Why is it so difficult to work and get along with certain people? The answer is simple: People have different wants and needs. Recognizing and accepting dif- ferences in yourself and others is es- sential as you all work towards a com- mon goal. To achieve desired project results, you have to be willing to work with all types of people. • How To Avoid Confrontation with Change Orders. Change orders are a way of life in construction and, unfortunately, so is the difficulty of explaining change in project scope and subsequent price increases to your customer. However, you can avoid confrontation and still be paid for the additional work that you have done. – Master the art of dealing with delays, accelerations, additions, dele- tions and other changes. – Recognize a change and get paid for it. – Understand how to document and determine the amount of a change order and how to communicate chang- es and their costs to clients and per- sonnel. – Examine change costs, contract terms and overhead and the impact they have on scheduling and retention.
