Brewer Cycles recently began sponsoring an amateur race team, equipped with a sup- port trailer. In addition to his VP duties, Tyler Brewer serves as the team manager of the ama- teur dirt bike races. "The truck is almost 70 feet long. They go to larger local races and qualifiers. We set up our tents, and our race team sells, services and repairs," Chris Brewer said. "My son just ran with it. He goes to the line, helps the boys out, and he can relate to the [racers]." The dealership supports more than 50 rac- ers and plans to continue into 2015. Since the sponsorships began, Brewer says dirt bike busi- ness at the dealership has increased by more than 300 percent. "I always raced all my life, and [Tyler] raced for a short period of time. It was my passion as well," Brewer said. The continued growth has led Brewer Cycles to consider future partnerships with other sponsors in the racing series. A dealership can only succeed if it has a team that can work together; such is the case at Brewer Cycles. "I have a really good staff here," added Brewer. "I have a lot of people that have been with me for more than 20 years, and I have to give a lot of credit for our success to my employees." That ability is incredibly important to the Hansens, as their rural loca- tion makes having immediate access to thou- sands of parts crucial to their service business. The old electronic system, however, was not a management platform that allowed the Hansens to control or dictate the data placed in the system or deleted from it. At one point, a few part numbers were removed from the system as OEMs stopped producing those parts. When that happened, the Hansens' bin location infor- mation with those deleted parts suddenly was gone as well. It was a logistical night- mare that popped up one season and grew steadily worse in the next couple of years. This forced the Hansens to look at other business systems, including a dealership management platform that not only provided parts and service department support, but also major unit inventory, lead management and accounting as well. Plus, the manage- ment platform included a full marketing component which gave Hansen Sports its first-ever website. The new website already has provided leads for its rental pontoon boat business. Plus, Dean's girlfriend, Nancy, is now contemplating how to do more with the dealership's Facebook site, including possibly converting ice cream scoops this summer into Facebook Likes. It's all part of the latest transformation of a more than 70-year-old business that has survived by changing. In the early 1970s, that change was staying open year-round, taking advantage of increased winter activity and a new brand. Much later, change meant varying inventory so the grocery store became more of a convenience store to better serve the migra- tory population that does much of its food shopping in the large metro areas before driv- ing two hours north to Bay Lake and its restful, tree-lined shoreline. Now, change comes thanks to the Internet and the dealership management platform that provides a readily available, up-to-date analy- sis of their business — one sled or scoop of ice cream at a time. PASCALE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 32 was below plan, 46 percent said overall busi- ness conditions were somewhat strong or very strong in the quarter. Used unit sales across all segments were a strong point for these dealers in Q1, as half reported pre-owned unit sales were somewhat strong or very strong. That compares to 37 per- cent who said new unit sales were somewhat strong or very strong. As far as sales growth by brand, 62 percent of Honda ATV dealers in this group reported sales of those units were up in 5 percent or more in Q1. Dealers are optimistic about even more brands in the next 12 months, as 60 per- cent or more of these ATV dealers expect to see growth in Can-Am, Honda, Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha ATVs. ATV inventory levels for these dealers were nearly identical to the total dealer group, with 58 percent reporting it's "about right" and 38 percent saying it's too heavy. The survey also found that of the ATV dealers in this studied group, all of them also carry side- by-sides; 83 percent sell snowmobiles; 83 percent sell motorcycles, and 42 percent are marine deal- ers (including PWC and/ boats).
