26 nSeptember 2016n www.thunderpress.net THUNDER PRESS This badass bike show took place right in the heart of Hollister during the Hollister Independence Rally where thousands of bikers rode in over the 4th of July weekend. They were able to set up the bike show right on the footsteps of the Veterans Memorial Hall in downtown Hollister. Also revealed and on dis- play for the Hollister rally crowd was the years-in-the-making 1945 Knucklehead chopper built by Mondo Porras as a memorial to the slain San Francisco Hell's Angel leader, Mark "Papa" Guardado. Present for the reveal was Papa's son Mark Jr. and grandson, Mark III. It was a very touching presentation of a long time dream of Papa's with parts gathered and saved for this very build by his Hell's Angels brothers and Mondo. One of the best parts of this bike show was the special class entitled "The Mann-Kind" award. This award came to be part of this show with the help of Jacquie Mann's contin- ued devotion to keep the legendary, inspiring work of her husband, David Mann alive with her friends, Mondo and Les. Jacquie gave them access to a bike show placard used by David Mann in a bike show he was judging many years ago. This special placard featured a drawing done by a friend of David's, well-known cartoonist Jon Towle, after a farewell barbecue to David and Jacquie when they left California. Apparently David Mann wasn't as good with the barbecue as he was with his paintings. The plac- ards were used to identify each bike entry with year, make and model and the owner's name. Since Jacquie Mann was unable to be present for this show, with the modern day tech- nology of video calls, she nonetheless had the special honor of viewing every entry and awarding "The Mann- Kind" award to Old School Jim Corcoran for his 1974 Shovelhead chopper. Jacquie told the crowd on hand when the awards were given that Jim's bike was the best representation of David's kind of bikes. Mondo, Les and Michelle will be putting together another Vintage Chopper Bike Show at Street Vibrations in Reno this September and hopefully it is just the start of many more to come. 4 The award winners of Denver's Choppers Vintage Bike Show: Best of Show: Dalton Walker for a David Mann and Crazy Ed Roth (the creative hot rodder genius and creator of Rat Fink) inspired bike hauler with a 1951 Triumph.
