Cumberland Continued from page 34 See "Cumberland," page 87, column 1 tions, Commissioner Triplett made the announcement that the city of Cookeville would be the host of the fi rst Southern Backroads Harley Owners Group Rally to be held exactly one year from this day, July 11–15, 2017. (No mention of the word "state" in the name; this will clearly be a regional rally.) "We are honored to host an event of this caliber. Not only is this a huge win for Cookeville, but for the state as we welcome H.O.G. members from around the globe to Tennessee today, one year from today and beyond," Triplett said. "Our branding campaign for the state is 'The Soundtrack of America. Made in Tennessee.' Part of that soundtrack is the rumble of a Harley-Davidson traveling our sce- nic, award-winning back roads." Thor then took to the podium stating, "We are looking forward to bringing the Southern Backroads H.O.G. Rally to Tennessee. Cookeville was an obvious choice for a rally in this region. They have an experienced local committee combined with a community that truly welcomes motorcycle riders." George Halford went on to say, "We invite H.O.G. members from everywhere to join us as we 'Carve the Cumberland.' Our community loves H.O.G. and is so appreciative to be selected as host. Tourism is the purest form of economic devel- opment, and motorcycle tourism makes it even more fun. Cookeville is ready to take H.O.G. rallies in this region to a new level." Such a resounding endorsement is refreshing to fi nd these days. After a bunch of hand shak- ing, back slapping and photo ops, we mounted up for the carrot that convinced me to put in an appear- ance, our Carve the Cumberland Celebration Ride. Led by Bubba Boswell and his wife Betsy, we headed east of town and, within a matter of minutes, were able to escape the city heat, relishing the cool environs of the overhanging foliage, whipping through both lazy and tight curves, asphalt danc- ing along the Highland Rim. And as always, riding with the locals proved to be some of the best riding
