28 nOctober 2016n www.thunderpress.net THUNDER PRESS friends and members of a social club called the Chubbs Brothers. Next thing they knew they were the tatted-up new members of the group that claims to be a drinking club with a motorcycle problem… even though neither of them drink. Sweet Tea These two sweet ladies were hustling for Twisted Tea over at the Broken Spoke. Even though they were sweating in the sun, Erica and Roxy were pleasant and precious as they gushed that this was the best gig they've ever had. "Where else do you get paid to have fun and party with really great people?" they asked. Cowboy biker Frank was sitting on his bike in front of the Knuckle Saloon when we noticed he was wearing a spur on his right boot. The 57-year-old New York native who recently relocated to Tennessee because "it's easier to get to the cool rallies" told us all about it. Turns out that at 17, he and his cousin Garry were dating girls who teased the boys about looking like cowboys as they kicked their Panhead choppers to life. The girls went in together and bought a pair of sterling silver spurs, then gave one to each of the boys and they wore them for years. Cousin Garry eventually had a horrifi c bike accident that left him incapacitated, but still alive. Today, 40 years later, Frank still wears the spur on his kicking foot in Garry's honor despite the fact that he now rides an electric start. Stud muffi n A young gun is trying on spiked helmets at a vendor booth on Lazelle so we ask if we can take a picture. Little did we know the guy would unleash his inner porn star. He launches into a variety of poses to show off his tush, complete with lick- ing his lips, batting his eyes and hang- ing off the fencing while twerking. He managed to completely embarrass us… which isn't easy to do. Sensible Sarah The last day of the rally a group of us fi nd ourselves bellied up to the bar to decompress and our quick-wit- ted 23-year-old Maine-native waitress turns out to be our favorite entertain- ment. Sarah's just shy of completing her nursing degree, and has traveled to every state in the union except Texas, North Dakota and Hawaii; the latter she is planning to visit after the rally. She shares suds-slingin' tales and laughs about the time she was paid for waitressing with $300 worth of porn products like whips, chains, handcuffs and a variety of unmentionables. Her life plan is to use her nurse wages to buy a bar and build up franchises, then sell out and travel the world. Card shark For her fi rst time in Sturgis, Talesha was bitten hard by the magic of the party scene and shared that she plans to make it back as often as possible as she declared, "I had a total blast!" She got to see David Allan Coe and Willie Nelson perform, danced the night away downtown and watched the sun come up after an all-night card game on the front lawn. In between working the merchandise booth for the famous NorCal group, the Fryed Brothers Band, she loved the moody Sturgis storms and watching real bik- ers who continued riding rain or shine. Rainbow Rainbow is a Ruby Macaw who hangs out on his owner's shoulder looking all cool and benign but comes with a warning from Myles to not touch the bird or else "he'll snap your fi nger off." He's well behaved other- wise and aids Myles in drawing atten- tion to his mission to build housing for homeless vets. Moonshine maniac And… speaking of losing fi n- gers… Josh Owen, that guy from TV who makes moonshine, was all over the place and we ran into him often during the rally but day one he passed his jug over to South Carolina resi- dent Mark as he shared a show-'n'-tell video of the day he cut off the end of his index fi nger, blood, gore and all. Lauren and Gary As a businessman who is willing to invest in Sturgis, Gary is a jewelry maker and has bought the building downtown where his Old Presidio store opened for business. His friend Lauren came in to help and the joint was jumping. Gary will zip back and forth between South Dakota and his Arizona based business while Lauren will return to her job in the booze business. We're thinking about riding down to check out the Arizona inventory. It's getting a bit nippy in South Dakota. Faces in the crowd Continued from page 24
