78 nOctober 2016n www.thunderpress.net THUNDER PRESS Where Am I? e "Where Am I?" game is for all THUNDER PRESS readers, what ever part of the country you hail from. Off ered each month is a set of clues within a riddle, and from those clues your job is to guess where our wandering reporter (and riddlemeister) Susan might be. Lo cations chosen are always in the Western U.S. or Canada. How does it work? e clues can be solved either by personal familiarity with the location, with the aid of a map, or by using the Inter net. When a clue is particularly important, and/or somewhat vague, we o en italicize that trickier portion to make sure your attention is drawn there. Where/when/what do I win? Very important: Do not e-mail your guess until the 8th of the month, so every one in our circulation area has a chance to get a copy of the paper. en on the 8th e-mail Susan at susan@tohonor.org and if you're the fi h correct e-mail you win. (Note: If there's no phone number in your e-mail where I can call you, your e-mail will not arrive fi h. Some law of physics or something…) Winners are profi led and pictured in the following issue. WHERE AM I? WINNER JOE ELKIN Sober survivor Joe Elkin was born, raised and educated on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, attending the University of British Columbia, earn- ing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (1969). During his career Elkin worked quite a few municipal jobs, and those cities included Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, and North Vancouver where he was a property negotiator and land agent. Afterward he worked in real estate, acting as an agent and appraiser. After Elkin moved from Vancouver Island onto the mainland in 1980, he built a home on a family par- cel purchased by his parents in 1952. There was a small cabin there, and the location was between Whistler and Squamish, British Columbia. A skier since 1970, he was a restaurant host at Whistler part-time and in exchange was provided a free ski pass. Joe Elkin's fi rst experience motor- cycling was behind a friend on the friend's scooter. There was some alco- hol involved, which may have numbed their pain upon impact but did nothing to instill favor with Elkin's mother when he showed up bloodied from the ordeal. Elkin's takeaway from that was that motorcycles were unsafe and noisy. It was many years later that a boat trip to the San Juan Islands pro- vided a different perception. Again, alcohol was involved, but no accidents AUGUST'S WHERE AM I? WINNER DARRYL WATKINS Cycling squadron For the fi rst time in "Where am I?" history, there was no winner for our August game. And just like you can't wait to get on the road, we couldn't wait to fi nd one. Thankfully, Darryl Watkins seemed to be waiting for us at the next stop. Darryl Watkins was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1963. His mother, a native of New Orleans, met his father who was a police offi cer stationed at a Military Police detach- ment overlooking the French Quarter. They married and after their son's birth lived in Germany, North Carolina, Colorado, Washington, D.C., Korea and Oklahoma. Following military service the family moved to Austin, Texas, where their son graduated from high school. Watkins discovered dirt bikes in his pre-teens and enjoyed riding off- road up until high school. In 1980 his father traded a 1974 Chevy Vega for a 1969 Ducati and this became his son's fi rst street bike. He loved it but always dreamed of owning a Harley. When that opportunity later arose he jumped on it. In November of 1981, Watkins joined the U.S. Army to follow in his father's footsteps. Watkins went August's Mystery Location: Baker City, Oregon Last month's mystery location: Trail Ridge Road, Rocky Mountain National Park See "Joel Elkin'," page 85, column 3 See "Darryl Watkins'," page 85, column 1
