Schedule your service now. never a shortage of things to do, only energy to do it. In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, we joined the Sisters' Rogue Riders for a ride to Riverside, the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. We chose wisely. Roger Duffy invited us to see his shop, Duffy's Cycles. A step back in time, he had a '65 Sporty and a '78 Shovelhead on the rack, and a rare '85 FXWG with an Evo 4-speed engine (and over 500,000 miles) on the fl oor. The walls told stories of hill climbs, scrambles and fl at track races. After too short a time, we said goodbye to our host. Next stop was Omaha, Nebraska, where Elyse McKinnon, "Drag Bike Girl," joined us at the bar. We took in the cornhusker state with the Rogue Sisters. We saw corn, the Lewis and Clark Monument, corn, the Missouri River, and you guessed it—more corn! We stopped for fuel at the Lincoln Harley shop where octane runs high—premium was 100 proof at $7.89 a gallon! After a night at McCook, we split off from the girls, itching to get to Colorado. Across the state line, the rain in Wray turned quickly into hail, so we twisted the throttle for a fast ride to Colorado Springs. After 10 days of daily change it was a relief to unpack for a three- night stay. On July 15, the weather was perfect to ride to Pike's Peak, but the S curves were wicked. A delay at the top saw some turn back, but those that pressed on up to the 14,115-foot summit achieved a personal best. Most riders made it safely down, but not Megared. Her BMW 700 GS was offi cially out of the ride, but she hired a cage to stay on the journey. The day ended on a high note with a reception featuring Sarah SeCCret Moureau. She spoke about her heroine, Bessie Stringfi eld, the fi rst African-American woman to ride her motorcycle across America. SeCCret has followed in her footsteps with 19 transcontinental motorcycle journeys. With Megared now on four wheels, from here I rode alone with an early start on Highway 24 up to 10,000 feet, then Highway 50 where the turns tightened up Monarch Pass. At 11,312 feet I had the road all to myself. Coming down the mountain I stopped in Gunnison for lunch and impromptu See "Sisters'," page 66, column 4 Sisters' Continued from page 45
