I am not sure if the fence contractor that contacted you is a member of the American Fence Association, but as a member these resources are available. The American Fence Association provides a hard copy resource binder – the Health and Safety Manual – to all members, who can access a se- cure "membership login area" on the newly designed web page and access any updates or over 60 titled "tool box talks" for use in their weekly safety meetings. The Health and Safety manu- al can be modifi ed to accommodate the member company and is a widely used resource within our membership. Keeping safety on the minds of our industry is a very important pro- gram and if done correctly will result in a savings to the company if these manuals and talks are documented to the insurance carrier of the company. A very important part of the tool box talks are that all participants are required to "sign-in" and this docu- mentation is maintained by the com- pany. If an unfortunate accident did occur and the individual involved claimed "I didn't know" and the com- pany has the documentation available that this individual was provided the specifi c tool box talk that relates to the incident, the company is in a much better position if workers' compensa- tion or legal action is involved. As the executive director of the American Fence Association, I would recommend any non-member to con- sider the value of membership. These tangible resources are just one of many member benefi ts that are offered, and we would like the opportunity to prove the "new" AFA is better than ever! Visit www.americanfenceasso- ciation.com to see the many member benefi ts and upcoming events that are scheduled. Thank you for the opportunity to submit this letter to the editor. World Fence News is a great publication and supports the fence industry with every publication. Keep up the good work! Respectfully, Tony Thornton Executive director American Fence Association A young man who was an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He fi gured if he hurried he could get in 9 holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off an old gen- tleman shuffl ed onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man, as he was golfi ng alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old man to join him. To his surprise the old man played quick- ly. He didn't hit the ball far but plodded along consistently and didn't waste much time. They reached the ninth fairway, and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball, directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man said, "You know, when I was your age I'd hit the ball right over that tree." With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard and hit the ball right smack into the top of the tree trunk, where it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally been. The old man offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only 3 feet tall."
