Ft. of Snow Out of Season In Season Sq. Ft. Snow Source: CDK Global Recreation Michigan has sold the most snowmobiles this year, according to a CDK Global Recreation study provided to Powersports Business. Fiscal years in the study include sales from July-June. Though it's not surprising that the Midwest state led all U.S. states and Canadian provinces for CDK Global's Lightspeed DMS-using deal- ers, Michigan was actually fifth in 2012. Neigh- boring Wisconsin maintained a steady second place in both years. Ontario was the top-selling Canadian prov- ince in 2016, with Alberta coming in second for Canada and seventh among all states and provinces. However, in 2012, Alberta was tops, with Ontario coming in second as far as sales in Canadian provinces. Minnesota was the top snowmobile seller in 2012, and though its unit sales were higher in 2016, it fell to fourth on the list on the list of dealerships that use the Lightspeed DMS. TRADES The top three types of units traded on new snowmobiles (all types) have remained con- stant for the last three seasons. Those catego- ries are: mountain snowmobiles, consistently at 8-9.5 percent of trades; trail sleds from 7.5-8.8 percent; and non-specific snowmobiles at about 6 percent. It is surprising and notable that the order of trade types have remained identical in all three fiscal years. The percentage of units sold with a trade dropped from 20 percent in FY15 to 18 percent in FY16. The average trade allowance also dropped year-to-year, from $5,003 in '15 to $4,880 in 2016. SEASONALITY A strong correlation between snowpack and unit sales can be seen here. It is interesting to note that even as snowpack continues, early Michigan leads the charge in snowmobile sales See CDK, Page 22
