66 • MAY 2015 • WORLD FENCE NEWS May 1985 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the May 1985 issue of World Fence News, 30 years ago this month. • The cover photo for May showed Stuart Gray of Fort Worth, Texas pull- ing fabric into place on a temporary fence installation in Dallas. The fence helped contain a herd of Texas Longhorn cattle driven there as part of the festivities during the previous year's Republican National Convention. • WFN contributing editor Jim Lucci continued with his four-part series on effective management and dealing with time issues. Among other tips, he suggested getting to work a half hour early so you can plan your day without distrac- tion. • World Fence News contributing editor Jim Hart became the "ball in the tennis court of high fi nance" in what started out innocently enough as an effort to cash a check for ser- vices rendered but turned into a game of pass the buck spread out over many miles, eating up many gallons of gas. • More than 30 ornamental metal craftsmen and women re- ceived awards in the 17 categories of NOMMA's Top Job and exhibit awards. • We talked to one of America's oldest ornamental iron concerns, Stewart Iron Works of Kentucky. They survived some serious market fl uctuations over the last 100 years and reported an increase in demand for iron work at the time. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner detailed procedures for fi gur- ing installation charges based on ma- terials and labor. He also noted some considerations to keep in mind to in- crease profi ts through labor cuts via machinery. The cover story talked about the continued threat of terrorism and se- curity concerns at airports. Also a cover story concentrated on the fi lming of the movie "Hard Country," which took place at a chain link company in California. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner suggested simple and practical tips to satisfy commercial and indus- trial chain link customers who were becoming more concerned with secu- rity. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner continued with his series of articles for the professional fence es- timator. • Jim Lucci looked at the latest regulations from OSHA and how to keep up with rules from the federal government. • When the Chinese government loaned two virtually priceless pan- das to the Toledo Zoo, they had to be fenced well, and they had to be fenced fast! • The guy said there was a $500 bonus for J&L Fence if they could fence his house quick. The only prob- lem was, he didn't own the place.
