Unfortunately, not all of these changes end up being good changes. Feeling the aches and pains of daily living are now becoming somewhat routine. Consequently, the thought of doing a major renovation such as grabbing the post hole digger and installing a new fence around the house has definitely lost some of its appeal. Now consider the thought of doing this project if you were over 60! That kind of work is better suited for someone much younger, any reasonable person would conclude. Undoubtedly, anyone would find it absurd attempting this backbreaking task at 70 years of age! And if you thought 70 years old was incomprehensible, imagine how your body would fare if you tried working that manual post hole digger all day long at 80 years old! No man could do that, might be Pre-Formed Faux Rock Pillars Increase Pro ts! PHOTOS COURTESY JIM HATFIELD 38 Walt bristles at the thought of putting away the post hole digger. What an amazing person! your response, and youd be partially right no ordinary man anyway. This would have to be a man of extraordinary strength and character, and most of all, heart. This man would have to be incredible. This man would have to be the astounding Walt Easter. But Walt is not installing fences by hand at 80 years old; hes doing it at 87 years old! And he is emphatic about not hanging up the post hole digger! Walt learned his work ethics at a very early age. He was born on Christmas Eve 1925 to Charlie and Ester Easter in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. Walt was one of 10 children five boys and five girls. Their family survived the Great Depression by farming the land, working livestock, and canning the foods they had harvested. Of the 10 children, only Walt and his youngest sister, Wanda, still survive. Walt moved to Washington State in 1947, after serving his country honorably as an infantry soldier during World War II. continued on page 42
