28 • August 12, 2013 • Powersports Business atv www.PowersportsBusiness.com Polaris unveils 2014 RZR XP 1000 Polaris has escalated the sport side-by-side wars with the introduction of a new, highly revised RZR XP 1000 that comes with the largest, most powerful engine in the high-performance sideby-side category. Aside from the new, larger 999cc engine that puts out a claimed 107 horsepower, the 2014 RZR XP 1000 includes a new tubular chassis, a redesigned cockpit, freshened exterior appearance, an upgraded CVT and geometry changes to the 3-Link trailing arm rear suspension that debuted on the RZR XP 900. It's unclear if the new changes and design will spread to the rest of the RZR lineup, but this is already big news and it will be interesting to see how competing manufacturers in the sport side-by-side world respond to the latest salvo from Polaris. If history is an indicator, this range-topping model will be wildly successful for dealers and at the racetrack. According to Polaris, the new RZR XP 1000 was designed to bring significant innovations to its RZR hallmarks of power, suspension and agility. The interior design and comfort was also a major focus. The massive engine, however, will likely receive much of the attention, as the all-new ProStar 1000 provides an industry leading 107 horsepower with 999cc of displacement, making it the most powerful and largest engine in its class. For lively throttle response, the ProStar 1000 was developed with dual 48mm throttle bodies with new long tip fuel injectors that ensure each cylinder is supplied with the air and fuel it needs to produce power on demand. To deliver that power, the RZR XP 1000 has an ultra-efficient driveline featuring a retuned, CVT system to distribute the power from the engine to the transmission. With greater than 80 percent of peak engine torque available from 3,500 to redline, the RZR XP 1000 has huge torque required for aggressive riding. Its 3-Link trailing arm rear suspension was modified, and now offers 25 percent more ground clearance at the trailing arm and 13.5 inches of ground clearance. The newly-designed seats offer 100 percent more hip cushioning for a more secure feel, and feature a new thin-film technology under the cover for a drier ride in wet conditions. New seat sliders allow for tool-less, on-the-ready seat adjustment along with additional legroom, and space-optimized dead pedals for both the driver and passenger. A new, stiffer steering wheel is designed for comfort and a more responsive feel. The RZR XP 1000 features factory-installed quarter doors designed for more elbow room and extra protection from debris. An easy-access latch allows one hand operation and no-look closing. The cockpit offers LED floor lighting and a slick blue back-lighted instrument cluster, K The 2014 Polaris RZR XP 1000 has a 999cc engine that puts out 107 horsepower. readable both in direct sunlight and at night. The unit also features sealed smartphone storage that provides visibility of the display while protecting it from the elements and a 50 percent larger glove box. The RZR XP 1000 will be offered in White Lightning and Titanium Matte Metallic, and will be available in August. PSB UTV searches grow by 116% Side-by-side hits increase sharply on KBB.com By Dave McMahon Editor in Chief Expanding interest in the side-by-side market is shown from the latest data provided exclusively to Powersports Business from Kelley Blue Book. Searches for side-by-sides on KBB.com have grown by 116 percent through May, compared to the same period in 2012. Compared to the first five months of 2011, the growth in 2013 is 133 percent. Polaris dominated the side-by-side search activity on KBB.com with 59 percent more views than its nearest competitor, Yamaha, with Kawasaki third. "Among KBB.com's top 10 most researched P26x29-PSB10-ATV.indd 28 manufacturers, only one showed no increase in hits from 2012 to 2013. Kubota and Massimo, both published on KBB.com as of May 2012, appeared on the list of top 10 manufacturers in positions eight and 10, respectively. Another new manufacturer, Odes, also received a lot of attention, missing the top 10 most researched UTV manufacturers list by only a few hits," said Lisa Pelissier, senior powersports analyst for Kelley Blue Book. Following typical trends of rising interest in used values for UTVs peaking in early spring, interest during the month of May was down, with UTVs receiving 15 percent less hits than in April. The KBB.com top 10 most researched individual models list, shown on page 27, is again replete with Yamaha and Polaris vehicles, as nine of the top 10 appeared there in Q1 2013.
