The trike kit was one of several grand prizes given out at the annual rally, attended by 12,000 enthusiasts. Roadsmith general manager Doug Lindholm gave out the prize at the closing ceremonies for the event. In addition to conducting demo rides on all models of their trikes throughout the week, Roadsmith also hosted their 6th annual customer luncheon, the Roadsmith Rendezvous, which brought in more than 100 Roadsmith owners. In total, the four rounds attracted more than 1,000 entries, with 2,000 people in attendance. Lori Bryant, track manager at Glen Helen, said the series received more than 13,000 online hits for social media and on the site checking for results. Generating a buzz The Spring Series has a unique scoring system that encourages competition among the dealers. To win the event, each dealership team should have at least one rider in every race with each dealership only scoring points for one rider in the class. Even if there are 15 riders in a given class, the dealership only receives points for the highest finishing rider. While it's open to all makes, Yamaha pays contingencies to top Team Blue riders. Approximately 50 percent of entries are typically riding Yamahas. In past years, Yamaha has raffled off a new motorcycle at the final round of the series. The OEM also used to attend with display units, although that ended around the onset of the recession. "We are really excited to offer the Monarch II LLS for the Honda F6B," said Terree Matson-McCoy, vice president of Lehman Trikes USA. "The conversion boasts Lehman's well-known craftsmanship and styling along with the comfortable ride of the new independent suspension." Monarch II LLS conversions for the Honda F6B as well as the GL1800 are available through authorized Lehman Trikes dealers at an introductory MSRP of $8,745. PSB Gelfand personally competes aboard a Yamaha YZ250F, and finished second overall in his class. As impressive as that is, John Burr Cycles has only lost the overall event title twice, once eight years ago and another time approximately 20 years ago. Every other year, John Burr has come out on top, which has cemented the dealership's status as the most aggressive dirt-racing-focused dealership in the area. "We have a lot of racers that race for us, buy their parts and do everything here. It's kind of what we made our name as, so since we have so many racers, they typically come out and support us at the event," he said. "Our dealership probably makes up close to half of the entries." Gelfand says this relatively low-cost, bottom-up marketing approach has worked to differentiate John Burr from the larger facilities in the vicinity. "With our dealership being enthusiasts and doing things on a grassroots effort, we might not have the advertising dollars as some of the large dealerships out here," he said. "We're in between two huge dealerships … so we're kind of stuck in between … so our strength has always been our customer service, our customer referrals and our grassroots efforts on both the dirt bike and street bike side and that's what keeps us going and keeps us in business day to day." "The only Honda on the list showed the largest increase at 62 percent," said Lisa Pelissier, senior powersports analyst at Kelley Blue Book. "Interest is up an average of 138 percent from Q2 2012, showing a strong rise in interest in cruiser and touring bikes. Once again Harley-Davidson dominates the top 10 list in the category, holding nine of the top 10 spots." P30x32-PSB10-Cycle.indd 32 Sport bikes had an average increase of 32 percent from Q1 2013 for the top 10 models. All 10 models repeated on the top 10 list from Q1, and only two bikes changed their ranking. "Interest in sport bikes also has grown astronomically since last year, with the top 10 bikes showing an average increase of 107 percent," Pelissier said. Dual-sport bikes increased 30 percent for vehicles under 400cc, and 29 percent for those over 400cc. Bikes equipped only for off-road use averaged an increase of only 1 percent for bikes under 400cc. "Still, those numbers represent an overall increase of more than 100 percent in both categories over Q2 2012, showing that interest is still very strong," she said. pSB 7/31/13 2:56 PM
